This one, I thought was rude, until I thought maybe it was some motherly type who just wanted to bid goodnight to someone so she could rest easily. Aww.
One occasional tactic is just to act like you've already been talking. Sometimes they'll dig it, sometimes this happens. At least they said "kay."
